The Cave of the Lakes is located near Kastria village of Achaia region, at a distance of 16.5 km from Kalavryta.
It consists of thirteen consecutive lakes at different levels, which make it unique worldwide. Its total length measures 1,980 m., while only a part of 500 m. long is today accessible. The visitor enters the cave through an artificial tunnel, which leads to the second out of three levels. Suspended bridges enable the crossing of the lakes. Fossilized human and animal bones were found at the lower level of the cave. This part will be used as a bio-speleology laboratory to promote the significance of the cave at a worldwide level.
Residents of Kastria first accessed the second level in 1964 by wooden stairs from a 9 m. terrace. The enhancement of the site began in 1981 by the Greek National Tourism Organization.
