It is called the Gate of Greece to the West, as it is an international trading center, a major port and a hub for trade and communication with Italy and therefore with Europe. The ultra-modern "Charilaos Trikoupis" bridge, built in 2004, connects the suburb of Patras Rio with Antirrio, linking the Peloponnese with Central Greece.
